What is calcium?

Calcium is a mineral best known for its role in maintaining bones and teeth, but it is also involved in muscle function, nerve signalling and normal blood clotting. It is commonly included in bone health supplements, multivitamins and active ageing formulas, often alongside vitamin D and vitamin K2 to support effective calcium use within the body.

What to look for in calcium products

  • Around 200–500mg per serving is common; higher doses are often split across the day for better tolerance.
  • Calcium citrate is generally absorbed well with or without food, while calcium carbonate is usually taken with meals.
  • Vitamin D is often paired with calcium because it supports absorption.

Can you get enough calcium from food alone?
Many people can. Dairy products, fortified plant milks, tofu made with calcium salts, sardines and certain leafy greens can provide enough calcium. Supplements are often most useful when dietary intake is consistently below recommended levels.
