What is Valerian Root?

Valerian root is derived from the roots of Valeriana officinalis, a flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. It has a long history of traditional use and is commonly included in supplements, teas and sleep-focused blends. Today, it is most often found in products designed to support relaxation and restful sleep.

What to look for in valerian root products

  • A standardised extract rather than relying on root powder alone if you want a more concentrated formulation.
  • Compare extract ratios (e.g. 4:1 or 10:1) carefully, as a higher ratio generally indicates greater concentration of the original root material.
  • Valerian root is often combined with lemon balm, passionflower or magnesium, with different blends designed for different relaxation goals.
  • A strong earthy aroma is normal; products with little smell are not necessarily better quality.

Why does valerian root smell so strong?
Valerian naturally contains volatile compounds that give it a distinctive earthy, musky aroma. A strong smell is normal and does not necessarily indicate poor quality or spoilage. In fact, many consumers are surprised by the scent when trying valerian for the first time.
